What is Aries like in love?

Updated

Aries goes first. If they like you, you’ll hear it on the first date, not three weeks later through a friend. They’re a cardinal fire sign, built to start things. The hard part comes when the relationship settles down, and Aries has to learn that a calmer pace doesn’t mean the spark is gone.

This page is about Aries in general, about the Sun. Who you are, and how you love, is in your full chart.

The first move

Picture trivia night at a bar. Aries is the one who wants to be on your team, and if they can’t be, they’ll trash-talk you across the room just to make you laugh. By last call they’ve asked for your number. They didn’t wait to see if you’d ask.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars, and with them wanting something and doing something are almost the same thing. They don’t play hard to get. Honestly, they find it boring and a little dishonest.

Once they’re in, love shows up as action. They’ll drive you to the airport at 5 a.m. and complain the whole way, happily. They’ll sign you both up for a 10K you never agreed to. Doing something hard side by side is how they bond.

What settles them, and what sets them off

Aries feels safe with someone who tells them the truth straight. “That bugged me” beats a week of hints. They can slam a cabinet in the middle of an argument and be humming in the shower ten minutes later, because for Aries a fight is over once it’s been said out loud.

What scares them is anything they can’t face head on. Being left on read with no explanation. A partner who goes cold and insists nothing’s wrong. There’s nothing to push against, so they don’t know where to put their fire, and that rattles them more than any argument.

They also hate feeling like a backup plan. Aries doesn’t need to be the center of your world, but they want to know you chose them on purpose. A little visible excitement from you goes a long way.

Three decans, three kinds of Aries

Astrologers cut Aries into three decans, stretches of roughly ten days with a ruler of their own, and the borders move a little year to year. An Aries born at the start of the season has Mars on double duty. That’s the one who turns the walk to the car into a race and wins, then forgets the argument from breakfast before you’ve finished your coffee.

Birthdays toward the middle of Aries belong to the Leo decan, ruled by the Sun. This Aries keeps the wristband from your first festival together and brags about you at work. They want that pride coming back, and getting embarrassed in front of their friends hurts them for weeks.

Late-season Aries fall under Jupiter, ruler of the Sagittarius decan. Think of the one who signs you both up for a pottery class, makes a lopsided bowl and laughs louder than anyone. They forgive fast. A white lie meant to spare their feelings bothers them far more than a hard truth.

Who keeps up, and who moves at another speed

Put an Aries and a Sagittarius in charge of a weekend, and in ten minutes they’ve picked three cities and booked nothing. Fire with fire runs at one speed. Air works too, by another route. A Gemini or an Aquarius brings Aries banter and wild ideas, which feeds the flame instead of smothering it.

With earth, the friction is the clock. A Capricorn wants to check the budget before buying flights, and Aries bought them an hour ago. With water, the friction is tone. To a Pisces, Aries’s bluntness can feel like a shove, even when none was meant. None of these pairs is doomed. Each one just has its own language to learn.

Then there’s modality. Aries is cardinal, a starter, and so are Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Two starters under one roof fight less about what to do than about who decided it. They do well splitting the territory, so one runs vacations and the other runs the move.

What the Sun leaves out

This page has been about the Sun in Aries. It’s one piece of a chart, not the chart. I’ve seen Aries who yell in a fight and Aries who go for a long walk before saying a word, and their Suns sit in the same place.

The difference lives elsewhere. Your Moon says what calms you down. Venus describes the way you love, Mars how you get angry and how you come closer. The Ascendant comes from the exact birth time and colors first impressions. Take an Aries with a Cancer Ascendant. They still feel fast, but people meet someone careful and soft-spoken, and the fire comes as a surprise.

That mix is what I read in the Birth Chart. I take the details on your birth certificate, the day, the hour and the town, and set your Sun beside everything else so I can tell you how you love, which may look very little like a textbook Aries.

Questions

  • They can, but you’ll see it coming. Aries won’t go through your phone behind your back. They’ll just ask who that was. Their jealousy tends to come from feeling pushed aside more than from distrust. Whether it stays a question or grows into something heavier has more to do with their Moon than their Sun.
