Cancer loves like they’re building a family, even on a second date. They’re a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, so they lead with feeling and don’t wait around to be chosen. The catch is that they want closeness badly and protect themselves just as hard, so they tend to reach for you sideways.

Thanksgiving, sooner than you expected
A Cancer will ask about your mom before they ask about your job. By month two you might get invited to Thanksgiving, and they’ll brief you in the car about which uncle not to talk politics with. For them that’s a big step, even if they play it casual.
People forget Cancer is a cardinal sign. They do make the first move, just not head-on. They’ll offer to drive you home when it’s way out of their way, or text that a song made them think of you and leave it at that.
Once you’re in, they want the two of you to have a history. They’ll keep the ticket stub from your first concert in a drawer and pull it out a year later like it’s evidence.
What makes a Cancer feel safe, and what spooks them
Cancer relaxes when the relationship has rituals. Sunday pancakes, a show you only watch together. Small things that repeat tell them this is a place they can stay.
What scares them is being laughed at for something they told you in private. You can argue with a Cancer and be fine. Turn a confession into a joke at a party, even a gentle one, and they’ll stop telling you things that size for a while.
They also get uneasy with a partner who never needs anything. If you always say you’re fine, Cancer can’t tell where they fit. Letting them bring you soup when you’ve got a cold matters to them more than you’d guess.
The three Cancer decans
If you were born in roughly the first ten days of Cancer, your decan is ruled by the Moon itself. This is the most classic Cancer. Their moods show on their face, and they’re openly attached to home and family. The cutoffs shift a little every year, so your chart has the final word.
The middle decan has a Scorpio flavor, ruled by Pluto. These Cancers are more private and more intense. They might take months to tell you something big about their past, and when they do, they expect you to keep it like a real secret.
The last decan is ruled by Neptune, with a Pisces tone. This is the dreamiest Cancer. They fall for the story they’ve imagined and send long texts at 1 a.m. What helps is someone who brings them back to earth without making fun of the dream.
Who they click with, and where it takes more work
With the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces, Cancer doesn’t have to explain much. A look across the room does it. The risk is that both protect each other’s feelings so carefully that nobody brings up the hard stuff.
Earth signs tend to give Cancer the steadiness they want, and Cancer gives them warmth back. Capricorn sits opposite Cancer on the wheel, so that pull is strong, and it usually comes with an ongoing conversation about how much of life goes to work and how much goes to home.
Fire and air ask for more adjusting. Aries and Libra are cardinal too, and two cardinal signs both want to steer. Air signs think their way through feelings while Cancer feels their way through thoughts, so the conversations come close without quite meeting. It works when both stay patient.
