What is Scorpio like in love?

Updated

Scorpio commits slowly, and once they’re in, they don’t let go. They’re a fixed water sign who feels everything at full volume and has little patience for lukewarm. Once they trust you, they’re fiercely loyal. The tension is that they want to know all of you while keeping a lot of themselves private, and that gap can be confusing.

This page is about Scorpio in general, about the Sun. Who you are, and how you love, is in your full chart.

The wristband in the glovebox

Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, and by Mars in traditional astrology. They love with an intensity that doesn’t always show. On the first few dates they can seem calm, even a little reserved, while inside they’re already deciding whether you’re worth staying for.

A year in, you’re digging through their glovebox for a charger and find the wristband from the concert where you met. They never mentioned keeping it, and they probably won’t bring it up now either. That’s how their affection works. The important stuff goes somewhere nobody else looks.

They’d also rather sit with you in an ER waiting room than at a rooftop bar. Scorpio wants to know who you are when you’re sick or scared. For them, intimacy is measured by what you show them and nobody else, and that beats any perfect night out.

What helps Scorpio relax

Scorpio feels safe when what you say and what you do line up. If you bring up the awkward thing yourself, before they hear it somewhere else, their trust grows fast. A “my ex liked my post, figured you should hear it from me” means more to them than a dozen I-love-yous.

They also need room for their intensity. Nobody telling them “you’re overreacting” the day they finally say what they feel. It takes Scorpio a while to put an emotion into words, and if it gets brushed off the first time, they’ll keep the next one to themselves.

What scares them most is being exposed. Something they told you in confidence turning into a punchline at a group dinner, or a relationship cooling off without anyone saying so. A big fight, Scorpio can repair. Indifference feels like they’ve already lost.

Pluto, Neptune and the Moon inside Scorpio

A Scorpio born early in the sign has Pluto as decan ruler, their own ruler twice over. After a big breakup, this is the one who moves across town or shows up with a new haircut and seems like someone else by spring. In love they do the same thing in reverse and rebuild their life around the relationship.

If the Sun lands mid-sign, the decan belongs to Neptune, through Pisces, and intensity turns into intuition. They can tell you’re down from the way you typed “ok.” They’ll send you a song without explaining why, and they need stretches of time together where nothing has to be said.

At the tail end of Scorpio, the Moon takes the decan, borrowed from Cancer, and Scorpio turns into a homebody. This is the one who shows up to Sunday dinner with your family and remembers everyone’s allergies. What the two of you built, they protect without apologizing for it.

Water, earth and the signs that speak another language

Pisces is where Scorpio gets to rest. Both feel before they talk, and a night on the couch watching a movie without a single comment can be the best part of their week. With Cancer they share the need for a private, door-closed kind of home, and loyalty goes without saying.

Taurus, across the wheel, brings something Scorpio doesn’t have, a calm that doesn’t ask for explanations. Virgo and Capricorn tend to be people who do what they say, and for a sign that distrusts words, that counts for a lot.

Fire and air ask for more translation. A Gemini wants to talk about the fight while Scorpio is still feeling it, and an Aries has forgotten the whole thing by the time Scorpio starts processing. Another fixed sign, like Leo or Aquarius, brings plenty of loyalty and just as much stubbornness, since nobody wants to blink first.

What your Sun leaves out

This page covers the Sun in Scorpio. The rest of your chart has planets that pull in other directions, and sometimes they’re the ones calling the shots in love.

A Scorpio with Libra Rising, for example, shows up to a first date chatty and all smiles, and the intensity only comes out once there’s trust. One with the Moon in Sagittarius needs more space and more laughter than this page lets on. Venus and Mars add their own layer, and placing the Ascendant depends on knowing what time you were born.

That’s what I write about in the Birth Chart. I read your full chart, with the time and city where you were born, and tell you how you love, not how the average Scorpio does.

Questions

  • They’ve got the reputation, but how jealous a Scorpio gets depends more on their Moon and Venus than on their Sun. What the sign does have is a low tolerance for mixed signals. Their jealousy grows with what goes unsaid and drops a lot when things are clear.
